Day 56: November in Naxos!

November 1st. Wow. Just over 2 weeks to go! I must say, the number one thing I'm dreading when I go back? The COLD WEATHER. It better not be snowing when I get there, thats all I'm saying! But there are a few things I am looking forward to - besides the obvious "seeing friends and family". I can't wait for a pedicure (my feet are so beat up from walking EVERYWHERE for the past 2 months!). I'm also looking forward to a normal shower- one that I can bend over in, that has hot waterm, a door or shower curtian, and one I don't have to wear flip flops in! Also, my electric toothbrush (why do these all have to do with hygiene?! haha) Then there is all the TV I have to catch up on...man, I'm so out of the loop! Unless I spend every waking moment watching TV I don't think I will have time for it all! Oh well, I would've much rather been checking out the Eiffel Tower than seeing whether George or Izzy survive on Grey's Anatomy. And I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm also looking forward to going back to the gym! I know, call me crazy, but they have a really good spinning class at my gym!

Speaking of working out...I had good intentions to go for a run this morning (or at least a really long walk) but OF COURSE when I woke up it was raining. I was already all dressed and ready to go so I figured I wold walk around for a little bit at least. I opened up my umbrella and instantly realized that its not going to withstand the wind- thats what I get for buying one for 2 euro from a street vendor in Italy! I ended up just putting up the hood of my sweater and embracing the fact that I was going to get wet.

I grabbed a few things for lunch (I wasn't sure if I wanted to go out again if the weather continued like this!), and I also inquired about renting a car for the afternoon. One place said they didn't have any cars available (really, you're that busy that you ran out of cars??), and the other place I went to said 20 euros but when I asked him if it was manual or automatic I don't think he really understood me. He just nodded his head and mumbled something that sounded like "ya-manual-automatic"....um, okay then! I wasn't even sure if I wanted to rent a car anyways- did I really want to spend 20 euros driving around on wet roads that I'm not used to? Plus all the crazy European drivers I had to watch out for, then the fact that I don't really want to be sightseeing in this kind of weather, and of course its Sunday so who knows what will even be open! My other option- sitting in my room and reading! (ie. pretty much what I did for most of yesterday afternoon/evening). Although both options did seem very enticing, I decided for the latter...save money that way! I already finished reading "A Thousand Splendid Suns" (I actually went to bed last night, couldn't fall asleep so I got up and read the rest of it!) Fortunately I have one more book with me- and its another up-beat and happy one (ha, ya right)- The Diary of Anne Frank!

After lunch I decided to try my luck and head outside again. When I looked out the window it had stopped raining...but that only lasted for about 5 seconds after I got outside! Fortunately the rain wasn't that hard and I wasn't planning on going far. I stopped by a bookstore and picked up a magazine, then hung out at a cafe and enjoyed a cup of tea. While I was sitting there a thought occurred to me - I don't know why I didn't think of this earlier- What if my ferry is cancelled tomorrow?! It often happens when its windy out- which has certainly been the case for the past few days! On my way back to the hotel I stopped by the travel agency to inquire about the ferries/weather. When I ask my question, the man says "No ferries until Saturday". Um, whaaaat?! No ferries? Until SATURDAY?!?! Before my heart stops beating completely the man breaks into a smile and says he's joking. What a cruel, cruel trick to play on someone! He then says that the ferries should be fine tomorrow...Phew!

Oh yes, another observation I wanted to mention: all the Greek men- whether they are sitting at a restaurant, walking down the street or standing outside their storefront- have a string of beads in their hand that they are constantly twirling. I'm not sure if its a religious thing or what (I should Google it!) but they're everywhere!

Love, Dianna
