Day 58: Enjoying Athens!

The past few days in Naxos kind of had me wishing that I could go homw- but I'm not feeling that way anymore! Last night I met up with Dave and Carmen- people I had met in Santorini a few days ago. Their hostel was hosting a "pop quiz" contest in the attached pub so we went to check out the fun. After barely knowing ANY of the answers we were happily surprised to discover WE WON! (getting 23 out of 40 points...haha!) Free shots of ouzo and a bottle of champagne for our team- yay! The pub was only open until midnight so when we shut that place down we needed a new spot to go to. We ended up at a shisha bar and it was fantastic! I had never tried it before but it was loads of fun! FYI- shisha or hookah is flavoured tobacco that you smoke out of a huge pipe contraption that they put on your table (check out the pics- although I look like a big goof!)

Fortunately the bar was right around the corner from my hostel so at about 2am I headed back to go to bed (normally I would stay out a little later- the parties seem to go all night here!- but I was quite tired after a long ferry ride earlier in the day and not being able to sleep then!)

This morning I met up with Dave and Carmen again and we all headed off to the Archeological Museum- a perfect thing to do today as it started raining as soon as we got off the metro! The museum was MASSIVE. Ridiculously huge is another good way to describe it- we were there for a few hours and it seemed like we only saw a tiny bit of it. And it wasn't just your typical statues and pottery they had on display- there was also jewelry, medical tools, weapons, and even a section on Ancient Egypt! Once again I was utterly amazed at how OLD these things are, and they have survived that long...incredible!

After the museum we grabbed a quick lunch (gyros of course!) and afterwards headed to the meat/fruit market. The 3 of us thought we would make a nice dinner together tonight- but we didn't realize how cheap it was going to be! We got a kilo of shrimp for 2.50 euro, a huge piece of tuna for 4 euro, a big bag of veggies (tomatoes, onion, peppers, etc) all for 1 euro...it was insane! Not only that but it was also delicious- what a great way to spend my last night in Athens!

Love, Dianna
