I was a little bummed that my time on the Greek Islands didn't go exactly according to plan, but on the plus side I got to come back to Athens and spend time in a city that has easily become one of my favourite stops on my trip. As if it wasn't hard enough knowing that I was flying back to chilly London tonight, the fact that they weather was GORGEOUS today didn't make it any easier!
After making my way back down again I headed to the Parliament Building to catch the changing of the guard. I had heard it was quite unique (read: hilarious)- and I have to agree! First off was their outfits- skirts (I don't even think you could call it a kilt) and shoes with massive pom-poms on the end of them. It was hard to take them seriously looking like that! Then came their "marching" and I use that term loosely because it was more of a leg flick and toe point in my opinion- very strange but also very entertaining!

For my last lunch in Greece (le sigh!) I just HAD to get a gyro. I sat in the sun in Monastiraki Square and enjoyed my meal and then it was off on my final mission: to get a pair of sandals. I know, I know, I already got a pair when I was in Athens a few weeks ago, but I decided that albeit cute, they weren't your official "gladiator" sandal...something I just HAD to get! I went to this shop on the same street as my hostel called "Melissinos Art", home of "The Poet Sandalmaker". They have been in business since the 1920s, been talked about in magazines and newspapers all over the world, and have made shoes for John Lennon, Jackie O., Barbra Streisand, etc. They have 27 styles to choose from (or you can also get some custom made!) and although they weren't as cheap as the ones I bought before, they were still quite affordable considering how well-known they are!
Soon after I picked up my new shoes it was time to leave for the airport- my time in Greece was coming to a close! The flight was quite enjoyable- I recommend Aegean Airlines if your ever travelling through this part of the world! There was no line-up at check-in or security, and the flight had a movie (a chick flick no less!) plus a yummy dinner! When I arrived in London (8 degrees- yuck!) I picked up my bag from baggage claim, then bought my ticket for the train to Kit and Laura's. The next one was leaving in 3 minutes so I booked it down to the platform...only to see the train driving away! I had to wait a half hour for the next one- grr!- but I made it to Kit and Laura's in one piece (just a little later than expected).
I must admit, it is a little nice to be back in London. The leaves have changed colour and it smells like autumn- I kinda missed that! And its also nice to be in a country where they speak ENGLISH! haha. I keep trying NOT to think about the fact that my trip is almost done and just enjoy what I've got left...but I still can't believe it! Only 12 days to go!

This morning I headed up to Lycabettus Hill- a beautiful view once you get to the top, but it sure was a hike!

Ahh, I am so sad your trip is almost over. I've really enjoyed reading your blog and witnessing all your adventures. Are you planning your next one yet? Haha.
ReplyDeleteAs for the changing of the guards. I also admit, very comical. Albeit, when we were there, I thought they were naked. They were in tan coloured uniforms, but the pom poms, still there.
Glad you had good time.
Haha you shouldn't joke about me planning my next trip...because its definitely what im leaning towards now! not looking forward to going back to "reality" soon!
ReplyDeletei'll probably keep the blog going so everyone is up to date on my next adventure...whatever it may be! not quite sure what im going to do, but im not ready to "settle down" quite yet!
