Day 27: Sore Feet and Expensive Food

If there was an Olympic sport for walking, I think Mom and I would win! I believe it was about 6.5 hours of wandering around Barcelona today...as you can guess, I'm pooped! First up on our sightseeing agenda- Sagrada Familia. It's a cathedral designed by Gaudi, a really famous architect here in Barcelona who's designs are quite unique! Gaudi died in the 1920's so the cathedral was never completed, but in the 1990s when his style came back into fashion, they decided to finish construction of the place. They are still renovating it now (hence all the scaffolding and equipment in the pictures), but that doesn't stop the tourists from coming! We wanted to go inside but the line-up was halfway around the building!

We then headed to Torre Agbar- we saw some postcards of it and it looked really cool so we wanted to check it out. From the pictures it looked like they light it up at nighttime...but (as we discovered today) during the day its not as impressive!

We then made our way to Parc de la Ciutadella where we enjoyed the beautiful scenery and some lunch...

After that it was the Arc de Triompf (who knew Barcelona had one too!)...

And then a couple more weird Gaudi buildings- Casa Batllo and La Pedrera.

We were getting a little tired from walking so we hopped on the metro and went down to the waterfront, wandered around the port for a bit, and then finally headed home.

So now is probably a good time to tell you about Mom's obsession with pastries, desserts, cookies, etc. Many of you are well aware of this addiction, but I don't think you have ever seen it to this extreme. For those of you have never been to Europe you do not know about the bakeries and pastry shops on EVERY CORNER. Although Mom has made me stop at every window to drool over the goodies, we have been pretty good about not buying something every time! But there have been a few exceptions including the time we bought 6 cookies for 6 euros, and today when we went to a VERY fancy place for some pastry. I will preface this by saying it was delicious...but it was 8 euros for two little things! I guess as Mom says- we're only here once! (Although she has also said that since she's only in Europe for a few more days she needs to fit in as much pastry as possible from now on!)

Tonight is going to be a quiet night as we have a busy day of travelling ahead of us tomorrow. Our first train leaves Barcelona at 8:45 in the morning, and we don't get into Marseille until 5:30! Ah well, I guess that's better than "real life" back in Canada! :)

Love, Dianna
