Day 40: The Amazing Amalfi Coast

Well last night turned out being a BLAST. I was hanging out with a bunch of people from my hostel, drinking wine, chatting, etc., and someone mentioned they saw a sign for a karaoke bar in Sorrento. Well it took a bit of persuading (I didn't really want to go back out into the cold and I'm not much of a singer!) but I ended up joining them for a night out and I'm so glad I did! We saw/participated in some great renditions of Enrique Iglesias, Tina Turner...and I personally sang "The Grease Megamix" with another guy from my hostel. By the time we got into bed it was around 3am but we still managed to get up early this morning because we wanted to rent scooters and drive along the Amalfi Coast.

I was a little worried that I would freeze my butt off but it turned out to be a gorgeous sunny day! It still wasn't HOT but I'll take what I can get! I didn't actually DRIVE a scooter (not brave enough to do that!) but there were 2 guys driving and 2 of us girls on the back. So to give you an idea of what the Amalfi Coast is like- I found it similar to the Pacific Coast Highway in the States but this was much more intense because 1) I was on a SCOOTER, and 2) we're in Italy where people drive like maniacs! There was a debate on who I was going to ride with- there was Barry the Irish guy or Rob the Australian. Barry said he'd never been on a scooter before and Rob said he grew up riding motor bikes. I figured Rob would be the obvious choice so that's who I ended up going with. But what I soon realized is that might not have been the smartest decision. Since Rob was so confident he was weaving in and out of traffic, speeding along the cliffs...fortunately I made it home in one piece so it all turned out in the long run! We rode for about 6 hours in total- making a few stops for food, and of course lots of photo ops! The scenery was just breathtaking...I had to resist taking 100 photos because I easily could have! Everywhere we turned it was another beautiful view.

I'm planning on a quiet night tonight, not only because last night was so late but also because we really want to go to Capri tomorrow- that is, of course, if the weather holds up! Keeping my fingers crossed for another great day...

Love, Dianna
