Day 38: Pompeii, Shopping and (More) Pizza!

The past few nights in Rome they have had free pizza at the hostel. It wasn't great but it was free so I ate it! Well last night I went out and had pizza again- I had to have it in Naples because this is where they invented it- and I must say that the pizza I was having in Rome shouldn't even be put in the same CATEGORY as what I had yesterday! I went to Sorbillo- the people at the hostel said it was one of the best and I have to agree! When I was first looking at the menu I was a little confused. Prices for pizza started at 3.30 euros. I thought that since it was so cheap it was going to be just a slice of pizza or a really small pie, but I figured I'd order one and if I was still hungry I could order another. I decided to go with the margherita- some people would think "oh just cheese and tomato sauce, that's boring" but honestly, that's all you need. When they brought it to the table 1) I was amazed at how fast they cooked it (I'm going to say 2 minutes flat!) 2) How HUGE it was (it was bigger than the plate!) and 3) how AMAZING it tasted. Forget having it for just dinner today- I want it for breakfast and lunch too! I do not know how something so simple can taste so good. And not that I'm complaining but I also can't understand why they don't jack their prices up! I would pay 10x that! (Seriously.) That pizza was WORTH being fat for! HA HA

PS. Have you noticed how this has totally turned into a foodie blog? Its sad that my day revolves around eating...but the food is so good here!!! And I actually thought I was going to LOSE weight on this trip! HA!

This morning I had something rare at my hostel: a GOOD free breakfast! It wasn't gourmet, but they had toast with nutella and jam, yogurt, cereal, juice and fruit salad! Yes, I said FRUIT! (I know, not a new concept, but in a hostel its very rare!) After enjoying my yummy (and well balanced) breakfast I headed to Pompeii. I'm not really much of a history buff (I skipped the Forum in Rome because I thought it would be boring) but checking out the archaelogical site in Pompeii seemed like THE thing to do here- and I'm glad I did! It is HUGE- they have excavated 50 hectares of a Roman city that had been buried after the volcano Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD. Since it was buried under tons of ash and rock it has been preserved extremely well. Not only was it incredible to see these structures still standing even though they are thousands of years old, it was also amazing to see the sheer SIZE of it. I was there for two hours and I probably didn't even see half of it!

When I got back to Naples I headed out to do some shopping- the deals were just too good to pass up! I got a pair of jeans, boots and a sweater for 31 euros! Ridiculous! But now its the problem of figuring out where to put all the stuff...hmm....

For dinner I went back to Sorbillo's- it really was THAT good! I didn't want to stray too far away from the amazing margherita pizza I had last night so I just added mushrooms! But I must admit, even though it was still amazing it wasn't as good as yesterday! I guess its kind of like your first kiss or your first time falling in love- there's nothing like it! (Did I just compare falling in love to eating pizza?? I have a problem...)

Tomorrow its off to Sorrento although I'm not in any rush...the weather is supposed to be crappy here AND there! Boo! Is it actually turning to fall here?? I hope not!! It's weird, I totally forget that the seasons are changing back home...I saw some pictures of the trees changing colour and it kind of shocked me! And some people out west were talking about SNOW the other day...ya, you heard me- SNOW!!! I'm seriously contemplating moving to a warmer climate!

Love, Dianna

  1. I truly loved our humungous pizza in Nice but this one does look very appetizing!
Dad has always wanted to return to Rome because of The Forum, so I'm sure he'd spend many hours in Pompeii!! The pics are terrific!
