Day 39: No More Summer in Sorrento!

We've all heard that European drivers are crazy, but I think Italians are the worst! From the looks of it, traffic lights are just a suggestion (especially for scooters!) They also use their horns A LOT. At first I thought it was because people were just really angry all the time, but I think they use their horns instead of turn signals. In Canada we put on our signal and wait til there's room to room into the next lane. In Italy they just honk their horn as if to say "hey, I'm coming into your lane right now so watch out!" It's craziness! I'm so glad I'm not driving in that madness, although being a pedestrian among those drivers can also be a little daunting! All of the pedestrian crossings (including the ones with lights) are merely decoration on the roads. To cross the street you pretty much have to step out onto the road and pray for the cars to stop! If you don't, you will be there all day. Pretty much the only way a car will stop is if you stand in front of it! You definitely need some guts that's for sure!

But it looks like Sorrento will be a little more pedestrian friendly (mainly because there's less traffic!) I arrived here around noon today- I'm actually staying just outside Sorrento in a town called Sant'Agnello. It's only one train stop away so its easy to get to...although everywhere in this area is experiencing HORRIBLE weather today it doesn't really matter where I am! Okay, I take that back. The weather isn't HORRIBLE, but it is COLD! Well, at least colder than what I've been experiencing so far on my trip! They said it was a high of 16 today but I think it only got up to about 10...which is such a bummer because there are some great beaches here, Capri is just a quick boat ride away...I started to worry that this was it for the nice weather but I checked the forecast for Greece and its still in the mid-20's there so hopefully it'll still be like that when I get there in a week!

Well today was pretty much a write-off. I tried to make the best of it but the weather just wasn't cooperating! I took the train into Sorrento and walked around the town for a bit. The views were nice (although they would have been nicer if the sun was shining!), and the town was quite cute (although it would have been more enjoyable if it was warmer/not drizzling!) It was well after lunch time so I decided to stop for some grub. I couldn't find a cheap fast food place so instead I splurged on a nice lunch and decided to have a quick dinner. I had some yummy spaghetti bolognese and gelato- my new favourite flavour: amarena!) and then headed back to the hostel. I'm not sure what's in store tonight- I wish it involves a great big sweater, slippers and a hot fire...I doubt that will happen but we'll just have to wait and see what does!

Love, Dianna

  1. Snow in Poland ... possibly causing the inclement weather.
How amazing to live in that glassed-house on the cliff!
